Many homeless individuals do not know of the services that are available to them. In addition, there are few opportunities that empower them or allow them to ‘have a voice’. At the same time, a decent proportion of the general public holds a stereo-typical image of homeless men and women. A new Bonner project aims to target all three of these issues.
Working with a few key partners–the Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness, the Rescue Mission, and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen–the Bonner Center will help produce a newspaper for–and with–the homeless. The goal is to produce one edition in the fall and one in the spring.
Two Journalism professors and their students are also collaborating on this project. Emile Loundsberry’s students will write stories while Donna Shaw’s will edit the work. Three Bonner Scholars (Caitlyn Dolan, Lyndsey Klein, and Alaine Abuan) are acting as the lead managers and organizers for the project–along with Tarry Truit from the Alliance.
